Included Markers
3 markersHOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) estimates insulin resistance from a fasting blood sample. It is a simple, well-established way of supporting healthy ageing and diabetes prevention.
What is HOMA-IR?
HOMA-IR is a calculated score, not a separate measurement. It is derived from two fasting markers: fasting glucose and fasting insulin, using the formula (glucose × insulin) / 22.5. A higher score points towards more insulin resistance; a lower score towards better insulin sensitivity.
Why this test?
Insulin resistance often develops quietly. Fasting insulin can rise to keep glucose normal long before fasting glucose itself moves, so HOMA-IR can surface metabolic change earlier than a glucose test alone. This panel is aimed at supporting healthy ageing and diabetes prevention.
What is tested?
The panel measures and reports three things:
Glucose (fasting) — your fasting blood sugar
Insulin (fasting) — the hormone that moves glucose into cells
HOMA-IR — the calculated insulin-resistance score from the two values above
How is the sample collected?
The test is a blood draw at a certified sample point (afnamepunt), with over 750 locations across the Netherlands. After ordering, you choose a convenient location and plan your visit. The draw is performed by trained professionals.
Preparation — fasting required
Both glucose and insulin must be measured fasting, so this test requires fasting. Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8 to 12 hours before the blood draw, and avoid alcohol the evening before. Take your blood drawn in the morning where possible.
What happens after the results?
Results are usually available within a few working days. Glucose and insulin are shown with their reference ranges, and HOMA-IR with its interpretation band. These are intended to be discussed with your doctor, who can interpret them in the context of your personal situation.

What We Test
This health panel includes 3 biomarkers to give you a clear picture of your health.
Fasting glucose measures the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood after an overnight fast. It is one of the primary tests used to screen for and monitor diabetes and pre-diabetes.
Learn moreFasting insulin measures the amount of insulin in your blood after an overnight fast. It helps assess how efficiently your body manages blood sugar and can reveal insulin resistance before glucose levels become abnormal.
Learn moreHOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) is a calculated index derived from fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels. It is widely used to estimate insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells respond less effectively to insulin.
Learn moreGlucose (Fasting)
MetabolicFasting glucose measures the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood after an overnight fast. It is one of the primary tests used to screen for and monitor diabetes and pre-diabetes.
Fasting glucose is a cornerstone of metabolic health assessment. Elevated levels may indicate pre-diabetes or diabetes, while very low levels can also be clinically significant. Consult your healthcare provider for interpretation.
Insulin (Fasting)
MetabolicFasting insulin measures the amount of insulin in your blood after an overnight fast. It helps assess how efficiently your body manages blood sugar and can reveal insulin resistance before glucose levels become abnormal.
Fasting insulin can detect insulin resistance years before diabetes develops. Early detection allows for lifestyle interventions that may prevent progression. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice.
HOMA-IR
MetabolicHOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) is a calculated index derived from fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels. It is widely used to estimate insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells respond less effectively to insulin.
Insulin resistance is often linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic conditions. HOMA-IR can help identify insulin resistance in its early stages, when lifestyle interventions may be most effective.
Related biomarkers
Biomarkers often explored alongside this test for a fuller picture.
C-Peptide
C-Peptide helps assess pancreatic health and insulin production, which can change with age. Monitoring supports diabetes prevention and metabolic stability in later years.
HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)
HbA1c monitoring is increasingly important with age as diabetes risk rises. Regular testing supports early intervention and helps maintain metabolic health in later years.
Lactate
Lactate metabolism can change with age as cardiovascular and metabolic efficiency evolve. Monitoring supports awareness of tissue oxygenation and metabolic health.
Uric Acid
Uric acid levels and gout risk tend to increase with age. Regular monitoring supports joint health, kidney function, and metabolic well-being in later years.
