Insulin resistance becomes more relevant with age. Track it with fasting glucose, insulin and your HOMA-IR score.

HOMA-IR assesses insulin resistance, which becomes increasingly relevant with age. Monitoring this marker supports diabetes prevention and metabolic health management in seniors, allowing for early lifestyle interventions when insulin sensitivity begins to decline.
HOMA-IR is calculated from your fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels using a mathematical formula. It provides an estimate of how effectively your body uses insulin to regulate blood sugar, without requiring a glucose tolerance test.
Insulin resistance is often linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic conditions. HOMA-IR can help identify insulin resistance in its early stages, when lifestyle interventions may be most effective.
Testing may be recommended when metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance is suspected, as part of diabetes risk assessment, during evaluation of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or when monitoring the effectiveness of lifestyle or medication interventions.
Low HOMA-IR indicates good insulin sensitivity.
Elevated HOMA-IR indicates insulin resistance. Consider exercise, weight loss, and a low-glycaemic diet.

Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and a balanced diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can all support insulin sensitivity. Reducing refined sugars and processed foods may also be beneficial. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
