Included Markers

4 markers
SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) Free Testosterone Total Testosterone Albumin

A hormone panel for men measuring Total Testosterone, Free Testosterone, SHBG, and Albumin. These markers together offer insight into androgenic hormone status and testosterone availability.

Why this test?

Testosterone plays a role in energy, mood, muscle maintenance, and general wellbeing. However, the total amount of testosterone in the blood does not tell the full story. A portion is bound to proteins like SHBG and is not readily available to the body. This panel measures both Total and Free Testosterone to provide a more complete picture.

Who is this test for?

This test may be relevant for men who are curious about their hormone levels, for example when experiencing changes in energy, mood, or physical vitality. It can also serve as a baseline for those who simply want to know where they stand.

What is tested?

  • Total Testosterone (nmol/l): the overall level of testosterone in the blood, including both bound and unbound forms.
  • Free Testosterone (pmol/L): the portion not bound to SHBG or Albumin, representing the bioavailable fraction.
  • SHBG (nmol/l): Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, a protein that binds testosterone and influences how much is freely available.
  • Albumin (g/l): a blood protein that loosely binds testosterone; used in the calculation of Free Testosterone.

What can this test tell you?

The results may show whether your testosterone levels and bioavailability fall within expected ranges for your age group. For example, it is possible to have a normal Total Testosterone but lower Free Testosterone if SHBG is elevated. Seeing these markers together provides more context than a single testosterone measurement alone.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is drawn at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). There are over 750 locations across the Netherlands. After placing your order, you can select a location and time that suits you.

When is this test useful?

This test may be useful when you want insight into your hormonal balance, for example as part of a general health check or when changes in how you feel prompt curiosity about your hormone levels.

What do the results mean?

Results are presented with age-appropriate reference ranges. Hormone levels naturally vary between individuals and can be influenced by factors such as sleep, stress, and overall health. A healthcare provider can help you understand what your values may mean in the context of your personal situation.

Preparation

Fasting is recommended for more consistent results. Testosterone levels tend to be highest in the early morning, so testing between 7:00 and 10:00 AM is advised.

What happens after the results?

Your results are available in your personal dashboard. If you have questions about the values, or if any results fall outside the reference range, discussing them with your healthcare provider is recommended.

What We Test

This health panel includes 4 biomarkers to give you a clear picture of your health.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein produced by the liver that binds to sex hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. It helps regulate the amount of free, active hormones available in the body.

Learn more

Free testosterone is the unbound, bioavailable form of testosterone that can directly enter cells and activate receptors. It may indicate your body's functional androgen activity. Your healthcare provider can help interpret what your levels mean.

Learn more

Total testosterone measures the combined amount of bound and free testosterone in the blood. As the primary androgen, testosterone may influence muscle mass, bone density, libido, mood, and energy levels in both men and women.

Learn more

Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood, produced by the liver. It maintains fluid balance, transports hormones and nutrients, and serves as an indicator of liver and kidney function.
