Leukocytes High or Low: What Does That Mean for You?
Leukocytes are the white blood cells that protect your body against infections. When leukocytes are elevated or low, there may be various causes. Elevated leukocytes may indicate an infection or inflammation. Your immune system changes as you age. A blood test can show whether your white blood cells fall within normal ranges. The information on this page is intended as general information and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always discuss your results with a doctor.
Reference Ranges
Reference ranges may vary between laboratories. When you order a test, a BIG-registered doctor assesses your personal results in context. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.
What It Measures
The count is a standard component of the blood count. With an abnormal result, further investigation into the cause may be needed, such as a blood smear or bone marrow examination.
Why It Matters
Thrombocytosis (too many) can be reactive — as a result of inflammation, infection, or iron deficiency — or primary, due to a bone marrow disorder. In the reactive form, the count normalises once the underlying cause is treated.
